Preparation for Primary 1

Kiern is going to Primary 1 next year. Its another major milestones for a Singaporean kid. Me as a mother naturally is excited and worried at the same time.

Excited - Its alway happy to know that your own child has progress well and grow well to the next stage of his life. I am excited to see Kiern going to a bigger school, to make new friends, to wear new school uniform & shoes and to be independent. I am always on a look out on when will Primary 1 registration starts. Even to the extend where I am counting down to July because thats when registration will starts for the Phrase 1 (fyi, Kiern will be in Phrase 2A2). Excitement did not catch up on Kiern, he is still oblivious of what is going to happen next year.

Worried - Is Kiern ready for Primary 1? Things that makes me worry:

  • In pre-school, all their uniform shorts are elastic band kind whereas in Primary school, its uniform shorts are with hook/button and zipper. Kiern is so used to just pulling his pants down when he wants to pee. Is he gonna wet his pants because he is unable to pull down his pants as easily?
  • Kiern got big "open" ears which he inherited from me. I do not have any major problem because as a girl, I have my long hairs to cover my ears but for Kiern, he can't hide. Will other kids laugh at his ears and make him feels upset?
  • Kiern is going to buy his own food and drinks when he goes to Primary 1. Do he understand the concept of money values?
  • For all who knows Kiern, he do not speak mandarin and lately it seems that he detest the language. Is he able to cope the Chinese lessons?

I am trying to help Kiern do some preparations before he goes to Primary school mainly; I had tasked LaoYe to teach Kiern how to unzip or take out his pants when he needs to go to the loo. Come June, I will be giving Kiern allowances to teach and let him understand the concept of money. As for Chinese, I am still working hard on it. I am teaching him Chinese for the past few months and also he been attending Chinese tuition on every Sat. I did see his improvement, now he can regconise and read some Chinese words but the problem is he do not know how to use it or phase it. Heard that Berries (a Chinese enrichment center) is good, I will be enrolling him into it as Berries are teaching Chinese in a fun and loving way, hopefully he will starts to like to learn Chinese.
